Use page-less mode and set your text width
last updated at: 27 Oct 2026
Page-less mode shows a document as one long column of text, without pages, page breaks, headers, or footers. Wide tables and images get room beside the text, so you can read and edit them without squeezing them into the page.
Switch a document to page-less
- Click File in the toolbar and choose Page setup….
- Click the Page-less tab.
- Click OK.
You can also choose Format → Switch to page-less format. To go back, choose Format → Switch to pages format, or the Pages tab in Page setup…. Edit → Undo takes the switch back too.
Page-less is a setting of the document, so everyone who opens it sees it page-less. If you can only view the document, you can't change it.
Choose your text width
- In a page-less document, click File and choose Page setup….
- On the Page-less tab, under Text width, pick Narrow, Medium, Wide, or Full.
- Click OK.
A new account starts at Narrow. Full fills the window, less a margin on each side. The text width is yours alone: it applies to every page-less document you open, on every device you sign in on, and the people you share with keep their own. Viewers can set it too. On a phone the text fills the screen, so there's no text width to pick.
Wide tables and images
In a page-less document, a table can be wider than the text. Drag its right edge past the end of the text to make it wider. A table wider than the window starts where the text starts and scrolls sideways. A column can be up to the width of the paper set on the Pages tab.
An image or a chart can also be wider than the text, up to the width of the paper. It starts where the text starts and shrinks to fit when the window is narrower.
When you switch back to pages, a wide table keeps its widths and scrolls sideways inside the page. A wide image shows at the width of the page's text.
What changes in page-less mode
- Headers, footers, and page numbers aren't shown, and the menus leave them out. They stay in the document and come back when you switch to pages.
- Page breaks aren't shown, and Insert has no Page break. A page break that's already there stays, and still starts a new page when you print.
- Footnotes still work. They're listed at the end of the document.
Printing and the PDF still use pages: the paper and margins on the Pages tab, with headers, footers, and page numbers. A table wider than the page is shrunk to fit when you print. See Print a document.
