Set the paper size, orientation, and margins

A new document is A4, portrait, with 2 cm margins on every side. You can change the paper, the way it's turned, and the margins for the whole document.

Open the page setup

Click File in the toolbar and choose Page setup…. You can also choose Format → Page orientation, which opens the same window. A page-less document has no such item. While you edit a header or footer, Options → Page setup… on its bar opens it too.

The window has two tabs. Pages holds the paper and margins described here. Page-less shows the document as one continuous column of text, and holds your own text width. See Use page-less mode and set your text width.

Change the page

  1. On the Pages tab, under Orientation, pick Portrait or Landscape.
  2. In Paper size, pick a paper: Letter, Tabloid, Legal, Statement, Executive, Folio, A3, A4, A5, B4, or B5. Each shows its size in centimeters. Turning the page keeps the paper, so A4 stays A4 in landscape.
  3. Under Margins (centimeters), type the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right margin.
  4. Click OK, or Cancel to leave the page as it was.

A margin can be 0 cm or more, but it has to leave room for your text. If it doesn't, the window says so and OK stays off until you fix it.

When wider margins, a turn of the page, or a smaller paper leaves less room for the text, a table keeps its column widths and scrolls sideways inside the page instead of shrinking. A table inside a list or inside another table still shrinks to fit the text.

A document has one page setup, so it applies to every page. If the paper isn't one in the list, for example after you import a Word file, Paper size shows Custom until you pick another.

If you can only view the document, the window shows the page setup but you can't change it, and it has a Close button instead of OK. In a page-less document you can still pick your own text width, which OK saves.
